Honolulu – Dr. David Paperny MD, FAAP, adolescent medicine specialist for Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, was awarded the Byron Oberst Award on October 28, 2007 at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference & Exhibition in San Francisco. Paperny played an instrumental role in the development of pediatric content for Kaiser Permanente’s HealthConnect program, an online system that provides doctors, nurses, and members with up-to-the-minute medical history information and eliminates the inefficiencies and errors that paper-based systems can bring.

Kaiser Permanente’s HealthConnect program integrates a member’s clinical record with appointments, registration, and billing to deliver improvements in care delivery and patient satisfaction.

In addition to his contributions to HealthConnect, Paperny is also known worldwide for his achievements in computerized health screening and health education multimedia. He created Teen and Young Adult Checkup, a uniquely effective approach to health evaluation and education of adolescents using computers, semi-peer health counselors and nurses to provide comprehensive adolescent preventive health services. In the area of health education, Paperny created various DVDs on topics such as child care and asthma.

“We are pleased to see Dr. Paperny’s efforts receive national recognition and are grateful for his valuable work which has not only benefited our members in Hawaii, but all Kaiser Permanente members,” said Dr. Geoff Sewell, executive medical director for Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, which provides medical care for the Hawaii Region’s 220,000 members. “His contributions to establishing HealthConnect is something every parent can appreciate because it provides a more thorough documentation of their child’s medical history that is accessible to them wherever and whenever they need that information.”

The Byron Oberst Award is presented to a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics who has made a significant contribution to the field of clinical information technology in one or more of the following areas; improving pediatric clinical information systems, educating child health professionals in the use of clinical information technology and creating health policies that promote better use of pediatric clinical information systems.

Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, the state’s largest and most experienced health maintenance organization, will soon be celebrating 50 years of providing quality care and health coverage to the people of Hawaii. Its 4,000 employees and more than 410 doctors are dedicated to serving its members on Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai.
